"Okay, repeat the exercise Cari tried with you, only this time direct the energy. Direct the electricity, into this device." Winland tried to hide her excitement as she held up a cell phone and then placed it on the table in front of Peyton. Cari nodded to him, her lips pressed together.

"Why is he here?" Peyton looked up from the wingback upholstered chair at Cousin Petie's waxed moustache and his lanky frame in the worn tuxedo.

"Hey dude, I'm just here to help. I came out of a very safe nest to try and catch this bastard."

"Cousin Petie is one of us," said Winland. "Not only that, he's saved more of us over the years than we can count. Plus, he has a lot of connections out there."

They were sitting in her father's parlor with the curtains drawn, away from prying eyes. "No pressure. It's just an idea I had and if it doesn't work, we'll come up with a different idea."

"No pressure. Good to know," Peyton grumbled, eliciting a chortle from Cari.

"Peyton, you've come a long way in a short amount of time. We're all just glad that you're doing so well. This part is gravy," said Cari. "Breathe with me and let's get back that feeling of connection to something inside of you." Cari took in an exaggerated deep breath, holding it for a moment and then letting it back out. "Remember what you learned as a small child on Oriceran. Magic is always about feelings. Thinking tends to get in the way. The mind is only there to focus the energy, but not to demand."

Peyton shook out his hands and looked up at the row of eager faces. "Maybe if everyone backs up a little. Who had pizza already today?"

"Oooh, my bad," said Cousin Petie, holding a hand covered in rings up to his mouth. He took a step back along with Winland and Cari and everyone waited.

Peyton looked at them again and shook his head, closing his eyes. "I never have liked pizza," he muttered. "Okay, let everything go. It's not like it hasn't been a hundred years or more since I've directed anything." He centered himself and felt just enough of the same spark deep inside to get him started. He let the same feeling of contentment without end spread across his belly.

"Give a simple direction." Cari's voice echoed in his head. The magic was already growing and the ache in his bones was easing. He opened his eyes and reached out for the phone, grasping it in his hands.

Winland stifled a gasp as Cousin Petie twirled the end of his moustache and muttered softly, "Oh my. Abracadabra indeed."

Peyton's eyes were glowing a steady green and miniature sparks of electricity danced across them.

Cari took Winland's hand and held it tight. "He's doing it."

Sparks jumped from his skin, riding up and down his arms. Winland held her breath, staring at the phone. Suddenly the screen came on and she startled, squeezing Cari's hand in surprise. She nodded to Cari, "Give him the instructions, just like we practiced.
